Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) deals with the delivery of electrical impulses to skeletal muscle in order to relax the muscles and/or prevent them from wasting.
You see this type of modality often used in people involved in car accidents, people sitting at a desk all day that develop muscle tension on their neck and low back, athletes with injuries, etc.
This is also used for people who have had surgery or fractures in order to prevent their muscles from wasting when they are put in a cast.
